May is National Foster Care Awareness Month, and to mark the occasion and spread some much-needed awareness, a local student has organized a fundraiser aimed at helping our local foster youth.
Tadae King, a senior at Vineland High School, has launched a fundraiser she calls, “Tadae’s Foster for Tomorrow.” In collaboration with three local Wendy’s restaurants as well as the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) – Tadae has set an event for Tuesday, May 21st.
On that date, three Wendy’s restaurants (two in Vineland and one in Bridgeton) will donate 10% of their sales between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to Tadae’s cause. Her goal is to raise enough money to provide 300 care bags for foster youth in Vineland and Bridgeton.
The Wendy’s restaurants will also be accepting donations of young-adult books, journals, coloring books, colored pencils and writing materials, and stress balls and fidgets to include in the care bags. Anyone who drops off a donation will receive a free Frosty.
Officials from local DCP&P offices will also be at the Wendy’s restaurants from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to conduct outreach and explain the process and benefits of becoming a resource parent.
Tadae initially conceived of the idea as part of her contribution to “Give Back Gives Back” – an endeavor taken up by students in the Give Something Back scholarship program that serves as a way for the future scholarship recipients to “give back” to their communities while still in high school.
Tadae is also a member of First Star, a college readiness program for local foster youth in high school.
